DEBORAH GILLICK-POWERS, BA, MA
Art Instructor

Deborah Gillick-Powers can’t ever remember a time in her life when she didn’t have a pencil and paper in hand. Art has always been a huge part of her life and for the past 18 years she has used it as a medium to teach students not only artistic appreciation and skill, but also a bridge to other disciplines to illustrate the inter-connectedness of the universe. She currently teaches Art and English to high school students at Liberation Diploma Plus High School located in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn. In June, she received the 2013 Educator of the Year award recognizing her work with at risk students in her efforts to provide them with opportunities to develop their talents in an often-neglected subject area. Additionally, she has worked with art students of all ages in portfolio preparation and development.

A lifelong Brooklynite, Deborah is thrilled to be working with Art on the Corner and looks forward to developing the artist within each child. “Children respond so well to art because they have a unique way of looking at the world around them. They are more open to the realm of possibility and are more willing to take risks.” Students will learn about the elements and principals of art as well as activities and exercises that will develop their artistic abilities.
